The mission of Clongowes Wood College is to educate its pupils according to the vision of the Gospel and the best traditions and highest standards of Jesuit schooling, as expressed in The Characteristics of Jesuit Education. In light of this the Transition Year (TY) programme in the school offers students a space to learn, mature and develop through a broad variety of learning experiences inside and outside the classroom.

It is the policy of the school that all students will take part in the TY Programme, which aims to promote the personal, social, educational and vocational development of students and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society.

The programme intends to educate the students for maturity with special emphasis on social awareness and increased social competence. This will be achieved through experience of adult and working life as a basis for personal development and maturity as well as the promotion of general, technical and academic skills with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and self-directed learning.

The TY programme endeavours to inspire students to become “Men for Others”, to discover and develop their own individual gifts and strengths, to become more independent and to experience a year where the emphasis will be on individual responsibility. In this quest we strive to enable the nurturing of thinking, caring, articulate and self-confident people and to provide students with the skills and supports necessary to discover their individual talents, aptitudes and abilities and thereby to grow as responsible, caring young men ready to make a valuable contribution to society in Christian fashion, when finally they leave our care.
