Clongowes Wood College has a very dedicated Irish Department, which places a strong emphasis on promoting the language as a living vibrant part of daily life in the school. The department seeks to promote an interest and pride in the language among the students and encourages a positive atmosphere in the College, where it is acceptable for students to speak the language among themselves outside of the classroom setting.
We aim to have two Honours level classes at Junior and Leaving Cert as well as one group at Ordinary level. Classes are taught through Irish from the very beginning in Elements and we also promote Irish music, dance, singing and debate. There are major prizes awarded on Union Day for Irish conversation with the Ó Dúill cup at junior level and the Ó Dálaigh cup for best student at senior level. We also award Fr. Rector’s gold medal for best essay at senior cycle – Aiste Bonn Óir an Reachtaire.
