The English Department tries to foster a love and appreciation of the English language and literature by developing every student’s ability to express himself in oral and written contexts. We aim to cultivate key thinking skills and to develop an understanding of digital media and the key skills required in using it efficiently and effectively for research, communication and presentation purposes. In co-operation with the College Librarian we also strive to foster and develop library skills.

We try to ensure that all students sit the Junior and Leaving Certificate exams at the Higher Level, except in special circumstances, and to strive for excellence in public examinations. We attempt to accommodate the needs of all learning styles by using a variety of methodologies, and our teaching is informed by the awareness that we have a responsibility to care for the individual student (cura personalis) regardless of their competence, aptitude or interest in the subject in keeping with the principles of Ignatian pedagogy.
