Clongowes Wood College is a seven-day boarding school located in beautiful surroundings, twenty miles from Dublin in the heart of Co. Kildare. We are a home from home for four hundred and fifty pupils from all four provinces of Ireland and abroad.
Clongowes is a Jesuit Catholic school that strives to support students in their growth towards a greater understanding and awareness of their faith and the part that this plays in their lives. Our primary objective is to provide an environment where students not only learn more about spirituality and the Christian faith, but also try to integrate their own spirituality into daily living.
For 200 years Clongowes has been producing an open, happy, stimulating, mutually respectful community in which young people are able to develop the full range of their talents and abilities in a balanced, integrated and generous way. A key characteristic of Jesuit Education, ‘cura personalis’ (care of the person), is at the centre of all that we do.
In attempting to cater for all students, Clongowes provides a great variety of experiences that support our students in developing their faith by creating an atmosphere of openness, acceptance and a willingness to search.
Pursuit of excellence
The pursuit of excellence is a core objective and the school seeks to maximise the development of each student’s capabilities in academic and co-curricular areas. While learning is paramount, the classroom is only one component of a unique living and learning culture. Great care is taken to identify and encourage the direction most suited to each student’s individual and personal development. Various study facilities are available during formal study time and include private study rooms for the senior years, supervised group study, peer tutoring, assisted learning, group project work, library and computer access.
Pupils with special needs are assisted by experienced and qualified teachers and also through peer tutoring as well as a whole host of other facilities. Many opportunities are provided for pupils to develop academically as well as in co-curricular areas such as sports, music, drama, debating, mathematical modelling (in conjunction with the University of Limerick), farming and others.
Clongowes has a reputation as a provider of top class educational and boarding facilities to enable it to fulfil its aim of building a living and learning community. Strategic planning under the direction of the Board of Management has produced an exciting plan for the future, which is currently being implemented. Over recent years Clongowes has made significant investment in refurbishments and new facilities. These include a new library, computer lab, university standard science labs and new art facilities. A brand new Sports Complex complements the existing all weather, floodlit pitch.
As well as being one of the leading schools in Ireland Clongowes is also one of the oldest having been established in 1814. Historically, Clongowes has educated many pupils who have gone on to play important roles in Irish political, economic, social, sporting and literary life. Students are regularly reminded that privilege carries responsibilities and that each boy has an obligation to strive for the betterment of society.
