Where tradition and excellence combine
Sport provides an essential component in developing and allowing our boys to express and develop their talents. At Clongowes we provide a varied and exciting Extra Curricular Sports program. We encourage all boys to participate in an active way. The numerous sports on offer will cater for all levels of ability, whether as an individual competitor or as a member of the many school teams.
As members of our sporting community our students are encouraged to be involved at some level and the policy of enjoyment and participation is crucial to allow the boys to continually evolve and develop as young men. It is our aim to provide a safe and enjoyable environment where our boys can develop and they can ultimately maximise their individual and team performances
We have many current and past, International and National athletes who attended our school and represented our college with distinction. We are proud of our sporting tradition and history and we actively encourage all our coaches to up skill through the various national bodies who provide excellent pathways for both players and coaches alike.
Sports on offer at Clongowes Wood College
Archery is a very popular extra curricular activity and provides great entertainment and enjoyment to all who participate.
We offer both winter and summer athletic programmes and are highly competitive at Provincial and National levels. During the winter term we compete in cross-country events at Minor, Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels. We regularly progress to provincial team and individual finals.
Our cross-country course takes in the many wooded areas surrounding our school and is a great challenge to the boys.
Our 400m six-lane grass track is the setting for all athletes during the summer term. With field events such as the Hammer Throw, Shot Putt, High Jump, Long Jump, Javelin and Discus providing an outlet for all shapes and sizes. Long distance and middle distance runners are put through their paces in gruelling sessions. The sprinters develop their high-octane skill and on school sports day the ‘Blue Ribbon’ event, has the best sprinters from each House (one from each year) compete in a 6 x 100m race.
The Sports Hall is home to six Badminton courts and the game is played by all, who wish to avail of the excellent facilities. The more experienced will progress to represent the college in the schools’ competitions.
The cricket crease springs into life every summer and novices pick up expert tips from more seasoned exponents of the game. We always compete at Under 13, Under 15 and Under 19, regardless of ability and cricket continues to attract large numbers of enthusiastic boys. The setting is unbeatable with the century-old cricket pavilion providing the backdrop.
Gaelic Football is one of the most prominent summer sports in Clongowes. Each year the school fields teams that cater for each year group. With students hailing from across the country, many bring with them an array of skills honed in their local parishes and which they duly share with those less familiar with our national game. This helps to create a fun yet competitive environment. Many of our students and staff have represented the college with distinction on the inter-county scene throughout the years and this trend shows no signs of abating!
Our 9 Hole Golf course, accredited by the Golfing Union of Ireland, is always popular and enables both the keen regular and novice alike enjoy the excellent woodland setting. It is always a challenge regardless of how many times you play.
The 2.3km Orienteering track takes the athletes on a testing lap of the college grounds.
Rugby is the most popular sport in the school and we traditionally field 20 teams at all levels, comprising four teams in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year and a further eight teams at senior level. We operate a successful ‘panel’ system, which allows the more performance driven boys ascend to higher and more competitive teams, thus allowing the remainder of the boys to participate with their peers in a less competitive environment, which is equally rewarding. Regardless of the level, all our teams deride a great sense of belonging to the ‘Purple and White’ of Clongowes Wood College.
The two main competitive sides in the school are the Senior and Junior Cup team, which compete in the prestigious Leinster Senior Cup (of which we are eight time winners) and Leinster Junior Cup (five time winners). These two competitions bring out all that is exceptional in our boys from the players on the field, to our ever enthusiastic and colourful supporters.
We are in an enviable position in Clongowes and are proud to offer 10 outstanding rugby pitches as well as a fully floodlit 3G all-weather pitch.
The 20m swimming pool provides an excellent aerobic work out as well as providing for a rewarding and refreshing evening recreation. Regional and National competitors make use of the pool facility to prepare for competition.
This is a popular activity which is enjoyed on a year round basis. The boys have competed in the Leinster Schools competitions at all levels.
Nine synthetic tennis courts allow the boys compete for the coveted ‘Line’ tennis trophies and the more competitive boys utilise the courts to develop their skills in preparation for the Leinster Schools’ competitions.
